About the artist
Antoine Vollon (1833-1900) was a prominent French realist painter, known for his exceptional talent in capturing the essence of everyday life and the natural world. Born in Lyon, Vollon showed early artistic promise and studied under his uncle, the sculptor Pierre-Charles Truphème.
Later, he trained in Paris, where he was deeply influenced by the Barbizon School and the works of Gustave Courbet. Vollon gained fame for his powerful still-life paintings, characterized by their bold brushwork, rich colors, and a striking play of light and shadow. His subjects often included elaborate arrangements of fruits, seafood, and household objects, which he painted with meticulous detail and a profound sense of realism.
Vollon's landscapes, seascapes, and genre scenes also showcased his technical prowess and artistic sensitivity. Throughout his career, he earned critical acclaim and received numerous honors, solidifying his legacy as a master of realist painting in the 19th century.
