These look like boxes, but the tops do not open. There is a small hole at the very top that is large enough for a stick of incense, but we think they're beautiful and would look just perfect as a sculptural element.

Two: Great vintage condition—arm has been broken on one of the ladies as shown in last image, but the metal is so strong that it doesn't compromise stability (price is lower for this piece due to the flaw)
