About the artist
Marsden Hartley (1877-1943) was an American modernist painter, poet, and essayist. Born in Lewiston, Maine, Hartley played a significant role in the development of modern art in the United States. He was associated with various art movements, including Fauvism, Expressionism, and Precisionism, and his work reflected a unique blend of influences from both European and American art.
Hartley's early works were characterized by bold colors, energetic brushwork, and a vibrant expression of emotion. He drew inspiration from his travels, incorporating elements of nature, landscapes, and cultural symbols into his art. Later in his career, Hartley's style evolved into a more geometric and abstract approach, influenced by his exposure to European modernism.
One of Hartley's notable bodies of work is his series of paintings inspired by the rugged landscapes of his native Maine. These pieces captured the essence of the region's raw beauty, featuring simplified forms, strong compositions, and a sense of spiritual connection to the natural world. Hartley's personal experiences, including his exploration of identity and his response to the social and political climate of his time, also influenced his art, resulting in works of deep introspection and reflection.
Marsden Hartley's contributions to American modernism continue to be celebrated and recognized today. His ability to synthesize various artistic styles, his dedication to capturing the essence of place, and his introspective exploration of personal and cultural identity have left a lasting impact on the art world. Hartley's works are treasured for their poetic and expressive qualities, cementing his position as a prominent figure in American modernist art.

Dear Art Lover,
As a vintage collector and curator, I've found that really good art is hard to come by. One of a kind pieces are expensive, rare, and once they're sold, they're gone forever.
I knew I had to find a more accessible way to get pieces you love into your homes, because everyone, regardless of budget, deserves a home filled with beautiful art.
In a world where everything is seemingly mass-produced based on fleeting trends, we curate timeless collections of art from decades past that won’t feel dated next season.
Xx
Abigail
