What is the Index of American Design?
The Index of American Design is a collection of over 18,000 detailed watercolor renderings of American folk and decorative arts, created between 1935 and 1942.
The Index aimed to celebrate America's usable past by showcasing the artistry in everyday objects and inspiring future generations of makers, artisans, and designers.
The project was part of the Federal Art Project, a work-relief program during the Great Depression that gave jobs to hundreds of artists while preserving American heritage.
The project's director, Holger Cahill, believed artists could capture the essential character of these objects with watercolors more successfully than photographs.
Artists documented objects like textiles, pottery, and furniture—capturing the beauty of American craftsmanship from the colonial era to the 1900s.
These works represent a unique moment in history—a celebration of creativity, heritage, and timeless design.

How we select our art
We only bring pieces into our collection that are super high quality.
Each piece is thoroughly vetted and sizes + crops are thoughtfully considered as to not compromise the composition of each piece.
*Please note that this print is offered in multiple sizes and as a result, there may be slight cropping of the image depending on the size you choose.
We strive to preserve the integrity and composition of the artwork while accommodating different print dimensions. Any necessary cropping will be minimal and will not compromise the overall aesthetic or impact of the design.
If you have any specific concerns or preferences regarding cropping, please feel free to reach out to us, and we'll be happy to assist you.
By Alfonso Mirabal, 1936
*Please keep in mind that all art is made to order*
Please allow 3-5 business days for production and up to 5 business days for shipping.
Since pieces are made to order, we do not offer returns or exchanges.
We do, however, have a quality guarantee. If you have issues with an order, please contact us.
Please note that many pieces in our collection are of centuries-old works. From 1700s sketchbook pages to New Deal–era folk art, we intentionally preserve the marks, smudges, folds, and other signs of age found in the originals. We don't see these details as flaws, but part of the artwork’s history and authenticity, telling the story of how each piece has been handled, stored, and loved over time.
